Vicky and Cristina are two young American women who plan to spend the summer in Barcelona. They are best friends, yet they hold very different attitudes towards relationships and love. Vicky is engaged to be married, and Cristina is getting over a previous relationship.

The complicated romances begin when Cristina finds herself attracted to a young painter Juan Antonio. While the two are dining, Juan Antonio invites them both on a weekend getaway to Oviedo where they can explore the city and make love together. Cristina wants nothing more than to go, and persuades Vicky to come along with her.

During the trip, the two women learn about Juan Antonio's love of his life who recently tried to stab him. As Cristina is about to fall into bed with him, she becomes ill and Vicky then spends the rest of the weekend alone with Juan Antonia. Before leaving for Barcelona, Vicky and Juan Antonio end up in bed together.

Vicky becomes very attracted to Juan Antonio but cannot pursue him any further because she is engaged to be married. Instead Juan Antonio goes after Cristina who soon moves in with him. After Juan Antonio's ex-wife Maria Elena tries to commit suicide, she must move in and live with Juan Antonio and Cristina.

In the meanwhile, Vicky's fiance arrives in Barcelona to marry Vicky. However, she tries one last time to see Juan Antonio before being married. To her dismay, things do not go as planned. By the end of the summer, Vicky and Cristina learn lessons on love and themselves.
